Smoke Doors and Fire Protection

Some buildings are fitted with smoke doors that will operate by closing automatically when the FIP operates in fire mode. The smoke doors are rated by time periods (2hrs or 4hrs) to keep smoke from penetrating into unaffected areas. When all smoke doors are closed, the building is compartmented to protect all unaffected areas. Fire protection is also installed into the roof spaces above smoke doors to reduce the potential of a fire from spreading in the roof space. When evacuating from a smoke-filled area, always ensure you keep low in smoke and evacuate to behind smoke doors.

Note: Smoke doors are held open by a magnetic release device that is connected to the FIP. The smoke doors can be also closed manually by pressing the small red button on the magnetic release device. The FIP must be reset to normal mode before the doors are able to be held open again.
