Response Structure/Roles & Responsibilities – Emergency Management Team

Optional

Stair Wardens (identified by wearing a safety vest):

Any staff member can be nominated or directed by a warden to act as a stair warden. This role is to ensure the safety of all people when evacuating down a stairwell. They would position themselves in an area to view all evacuees within the stairwell and to ensure all people evacuate in a safe and coordinated manner. Many people may get injured when evacuating down stairs. Always use provided hand rails and do not run.

Traffic Wardens (identified by wearing a vest):

Any staff member can be nominated or directed by a warden to act as a traffic warden. This role is to ensure that during an alarm or an emergency evacuation, all vehicle movement on the site stops. This includes forklifts, trucks, and other vehicles which may pose a hazard to evacuating people. They also need to ensure clear access for the arriving emergency services.

Runners (no formal identification required but may wear a safety vest):

Maintaining communication between wardens and the chief warden is vital during an emergency incident. A warden may nominate any staff member to act as a runner to deliver verbal messages as required and if no other communication method is available.
