Portable Fire Extinguishers
Portable fire extinguishers are located throughout buildings and are installed for occupants to use for small, minor fires only (only if safe to do so). Staff should make themselves familiar with the location and type of extinguishers installed within their area and ensure they are free
from obstructions. It is important to know exactly what is on fire and select the correct extinguisher type for that fire.
In simple terms, when operating a fire extinguisher, remember the ‘PASS’ acronym.
Pins are in place between the operating handles and are fitted with a plastic tamper seal to prevent accidental operation as well as indicate that the extinguisher has been charged and ready to go.
If you find it difficult to twist or pull the pin out, your other hand may be clamping down on the operating handle preventing the pin from being removed. By removing your hand off the operating handle, the pin should easily be dislodged.
