All buildings are fitted with fire detection and/or suppression equipment of some description, as required by the building code requirements. All of the equipment is maintained to Australian Standards; checked and inspected on a regular basis to ensure that it is good working order. The following information is a brief summary of the operation of the installed equipment. Staff should be familiar with all equipment installed within their area.
Portable Fire Equipment
Portable fire equipment is installed in the workplace to be used for small, minor fires in early stages and essentially for the occupant to use, prior to the arrival of fire services.
Tens of thousands of structure fires occur nationally every year. Quick action by staff members in the event of a small fire can drastically reduce fire loss costs, minimise the impact on the environment and potentially save lives.
Under the Occupational Health and Safety legislation, employers have a general duty of care to inform staff on how to safely use and operate the installed fire equipment.
